The
Kair KWHHRV2000 took PRIDE (Lions, Geddit?) of place in the Trafalgar
Square Sustainable House exhibition over November and December.
Max
Fordham,
consultant engineers in sustainable energy,
were developing a project
on behalf of Ken
Livingstone’s Climate Change Action Plan
consisting of building a sustainable energy
“home” in Trafalgar Square, which would showcase energy saving devices.
They
approached Kair Ventilation Ltd with a request for technical information
regarding air
movement graphs, noise, and details of switching amongst other details.
The criteria was to
install an energy efficient whole house heat recovery ventilation system
that would normally be specified for a typical new build domestic
dwelling, so far so good.
However, the
situation would be anything but typical! This domestic dwelling would
have a 40 sq m, clear, polycarbonate wall and see a throughput of
several hundred visitors every day.
The property is
heated, but as the visitors were likely to be cold and wet (Good old
British weather!) the potential for a build up of humidity, and
therefore condensation problems, was huge. Therefore an energy efficient
air change requirement was essential.
The Kair KWHHRV2000
"Big Bertha" is a whole house, heat recovery ventilation system with a 5 speed
switching option. It was decided that two units would be used so that
the higher speeds would not be required, and the system was supplied and
installed over two days by Kiltox Contracts Ltd.
The project has since
been dismantled and re-assembled at a site on the Embankment, where it
will remain open until being moved again to appear at the Ideal Home
Exhibition from 14th March 2008.
